Tour de Peloton Challenge

tour de peloton challengeAre you wondering what the Tour de Peloton challenge is? I know I was the first time I’d heard it. In fact, the first time I heard about the Peloton tour, I thought it might have something to do with the Tour de France. You know, like a multi-day, many thousands mile ride. Um, no thanks.

But I was wrong. Turns out the Tour de Peloton Challenge is something that riders who love their Peloton created on their own. The idea is you take a “tour” of all of the Peloton instructors. Not all at once or all together. Actually, there is a Tour de Peloton of all instructors sometimes called Death by Tens or Death by 10 Minutes, but I’ll get to that later.

What is the Tour de Peloton Challenge?

So what is the Tour de Peloton challenge? It’s a series of rides that you put together in what Matt Wilpers calls a pyramid structure. That is, the length of each ride ascends as you go along and then descends in the second half.

Think of it like climbing a mountain but in time. A Tour de Peloton consists of nine rides all together. You design a Tour de Peloton around a single instructor. So really it should be called a Peloton Tour de Peloton instructor challenge. Instead, people will usually call it a Tour de [insert instructor name]. So a Tour de Cody if you’re doing nine Cody Rigsby rides.

How does the Tour de Peloton Challenge work?

To complete the Tour de Peloton, you choose a Peloton cycle instructor and do nine rides with them, non-stop. As I said, you use what’s called a pyramid structure.

You start with a 5-minute ride, then a 10-minute ride, then a 15-minute ride and progress to a 30-minute ride. Then, you go “backwards” down the pyramid to your last ride. It will be a 5-minute ride, just like your first one.

This is a typical Tour de Peloton Challenge structure that peaks with a 30-minute ride. However, some people try to challenge themselves by riding longer within the nine-ride structure. So, their Tour de Peloton might look like this:

  • 10
  • 15
  • 20
  • 30
  • 45
  • 30
  • 20
  • 15
  • 10

How long are you riding during a Tour de Peloton Challenge?

In its original form a Peloton Tour de Peloton will have you riding two hours and 10 minutes. If you’ve done some of the longest Peloton rides–like a 90-minute Power Zone Ride–you may be ready to try a Tour de Peloton. I’m sure it won’t be easy to be in the saddle for that long. However, think about how accomplished you’ll feel when you’re done.

Tour de Peloton ride list

What’s great about choosing to do a Tour with your favorite Peloton instructor is you get to choose the ride list. You can pick the most popular Peloton rides, such as the Peloton Disney ride or any of the Peloton Broadway rides, like the Hamilton ride. Or you can do all low impact Peloton rides.

Your only limitations? First, you must choose nine rides with the same instructor. And, second, make sure the ride duration matches the Tour de Peloton challenge structure.

Tour de Peloton worksheet

I’ve actually got a Tour de Peloton Challenge ride list on Etsy that can help you stay organized. This Tour de Peloton worksheet has two options.

One sheet includes ride durations for a traditional tour. It’s got space for you to write in each of the rides on your Tour de Cody, for example, with the times specified for a traditional tour.

The other sheet just has the number of rides. That would be nine rides. You decide on the durations so you can design your own tour.

Want a 45-minute ride at center of your custom tour? Start with a 10-minute ride. Want a 60-minute ride at the center? Start with a 15-minute ride. And so on.

Either way, this Tour de Peloton worksheet helps you to stay organized. You fill in the date and time (ex. May 30, 2019 11 a.m.) for each ride you’re doing. In addition, it’s a good idea to bookmark each of the rides you plan to do in your tour so they are easier to find on your tablet.

Tour de Peloton group on Facebook

If you want to learn more about the Tour de Peloton challenges, there’s a Facebook group. I joined recently. With nearly 13,000 people there, it’s a ton of fun.

It’s also how I learned that the Tour de Peloton ride folks have created their own Etsy shop. So after you finish you first Tour de Peloton ride series, you can treat yourself to some swag. There’s a lot of really fun products there, like a shirt that says “I did it will all the Peloton instructors.”

I’ve showcased some of my faves below from the Tour de Peloton Etsy shop. Some of the categories include:

  • men’s clothing
  • women’s clothing
  • kids’ clothing
  • hats
  • water bottles
  • bags

What is the Peloton Death by 10?

Once you get into the Tour de Peloton universe, you may start hearing people talking about the Peloton Death by 10. It’s also Death by Tens. Or Death by 10 minutes.

First, you don’t really die. Second, it fits with the Tour de Peloton group’s motto: “All instructors, no breaks.” Finally, it’s going to be OK.

What are Death by Tens?

Let me break it down. The “Death by Tens” Tour de Peloton challenge is a series of 10-minute rides with every Peloton instructor. Right now there are 23 Peloton instructors with classes On Demand. But keep the following in mind.

First, one is a Peloton instructor that teaches only occasionally. That is professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde. Second, there are two Peloton instructors who left in the past few years but who still have rides available On Demand. They are Jennifer Jacobs and Steven Little.

Finally, there are two current instructors who teach classes in German. They are Irene Scholz and Erik Jager. So you’ll need to adjust your language settings so all of their rides show up.

All told you will be riding with all instructors, no breaks, for a total of 230 minutes. Or, just under four hours. Yes, you’re allowed to take bathroom breaks.

Preparing for Death by 10s

If you’re going to do a Death by Tens, make sure you keep nutrition nearby. I know Matt Wilpers always swears by bananas for longer rides. Maybe you’ve seen him nibbling on them during the 90-minute power zone rides during a Power Zone challenge. For more information about nutrition before, during and after rides, here is my article on Peloton and food.

Also, if you haven’t yet gotten yourself padded shorts, now is the time to do it. Here are some of my faves. Also, be sure to read my blog post about how to make the Peloton seat more comfortable.

Tour de Peloton on other devices

Of course, you can do the Tour de Peloton challenge without actually riding a Peloton cycle. Perhaps you’re an app rider, be it the Android app or the IOS app. Either way, you, too, can organize your own Tour de Peloton challenge.

In addition, I know that those with the Peloton Tread have started to organize their own Tour de Peloton challenges using that piece of equipment. And it wouldn’t be unheard of to do a Tour de Peloton yoga. There are plenty of five-, 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-minute yoga classes On Demand to design your own Tour de Peloton yoga challenge.

Final thoughts on the Tour de Peloton challenge

My goal in the coming weeks is to finally do my first Tour de Peloton challenge on the Peloton bike. Based on how my musical tastes sync up with certain instructors, I’m confident that I’ll do one of three tours–if not all three. And they would be a Tour de Denis, a Tour de Christine and a Tour de Jenn.

If I’ve missed anything about the Tour de Peloton challenge or haven’t answered your questions, let me know. I’m happy to revisit this topic and update this blog post as necessary!
