Netflix’s Beef released on the streaming service across the United States last Friday, April 7, 2023. The show stars Ali Wong (Amy), Steven Yeun (Danny Cho), Young Mazino (Paul Cho), David Choe (Isaac), Joseph Lee (Jonathan), Ashley Park (Naomi), Maria Bello (Jordan), and Justin H. Min (Edwin). The show centers around a road rage incident, and the violence that precedes the incident escalates to a cartoonish amount of violence. Characters are shown wielding guns, engaging in dangerous car chases, almost setting a car on fire with a baby inside, and more. The sexual content is graphic and disturbing at times, as it shows, with a character masterbating with a gun and having an affair with explicit sex scenes that have characters thrusting and a scene that includes oral sex and a glimpse of a penis. Characters talk about microdosing drugs and drinking alcohol, and there is a scene where characters are poisoned and begin to hallucinate. Characters are shown being shot with a gun, and there is a disturbing death scene that shows a character being killed with a panic door, slicing them in half.
Age Rating of Netflix’s Beef: Netflix’s Beef has a MA rating for nudity, sexual references, and violence, and the parents’ advisory recommends it for an adult audience, younger adults, and teens aged 17 and older. Overall Thoughts
Netflix’s Beef is never a dull moment; from the very beginning, where two cars almost collide and then begin a dangerous car chase, the show will grab audiences from the get-go and not let up. The writing is clever and sharp while also tackling big themes like depression and rage. It is one of those shows that goes over the top with the dark comedy, with scenes that will shock the audience while never overstaying its welcome. Each shocking and surprising moment gets crazier and crazier, and by the end, viewers are left wondering what is real or not while also trying to decompress from the rollercoaster ride they just went on. This author does not want to reveal too much about the show, because it is the journey that is the biggest enjoyment in this viewing ride.
Netflix’s Beef stars Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), who both give outstanding and strong performances that make this wild ride believable and authentic. They both play emotionally distraught and complex characters with an underlining depression that is projected into a rage to the thousandth degree. The supporting actors in this series each do an excellent job in aiding the success of the show while also giving standout moments with their time to shine.
Netflix’s Beef is a quick binge-worthy show; each episode runs a little over 30 minutes long, with the series consisting of 10 episodes in season 1. By the time viewers hit that climatic ending, they will be begging for more episodes and a season two, stat!
